Caranx caninus reaches 101 cm and 14 kg. Large Eastern Pacific pelagic jack. Laterally compressed high silver body with massive convex head (dominant males develop very bumped forehead, hence caninus for dog skull silhouette). Black spot on operculum and lateral line armed with scutes. Lives in active schools from 1 to 100 m around pinnacles, drop-offs and rocky passes from Gulf of California to Peru. Fast pelagic predator. Pacific cousin of Caribbean Caranx (C. latus already in base). Iconic diving encounters in Cabo Pulmo, Sea of Cortez.
