Description

Haemulon sciurus reaches 46 cm. Golden-yellow grunt crossed with characteristic wavy blue longitudinal lines on flanks, yellow tail with black peduncle spot. Red-orange mouth interior. Lives in dense or loose schools from 1 to 30 m on coral reefs and seagrass of Caribbean and tropical western Atlantic. Nocturnal, hunts benthic invertebrates. One of the largest and most photogenic Caribbean grunts. Often in mixed schools with H. flavolineatum under corals.
