Description

Anisotremus surinamensis reaches 76 cm, the largest Caribbean grunt. Robust silver body with black dorsal scales forming distinctive dark blocks, oval black spot behind eye. Red mouth interior. Lives solitary from 5 to 35 m on coral and rocky reefs of Caribbean and tropical western Atlantic. Nocturnal, rests under table corals or drop-offs during day. Rarer to observe than gregarious Haemulon cousins. Predator of benthic invertebrates. Sought-after photo subject for size.
