Cephalopholis argus reaches 60 cm. Grouper with dark green-brown to black body covered with black-circled bright blue spots (hence argus, reference to 100 eyes of mythological giant), with 5 to 6 paler vertical bands on rear body. Lives from 1 to 40 m on coral reefs of entire Indo-Pacific, introduced Hawaii. Territorial protogynous, males defend harem. One of the most common groupers on Red Sea and central Indo-Pacific reefs. Subsistence fishery.
