Description

Mycteroperca tigris reaches 100 cm and 16 kg. Large grouper with brown-red to beige body with distinct vertical dark patterns shaped like tiger stripes (hence tigris) on flanks, rounded tail. Lives from 5 to 40 m on outer coral reefs and drop-offs of Caribbean and tropical western Atlantic. Pelagic ambush predator of small fish and squid. Protogynous hermaphrodite. Sought-after photo subject for size and distinctive pattern. Important commercial and sport fishery.
