Description

Bodianus scrofa reaches 50 cm. Wrasse endemic to Azores, Madeira, Canaries, Cape Verde. Juveniles yellow-red with black spots, adults red-brown with yellow band on the back. Dominant males with characteristic bulging forehead. Protogynous hermaphrodite. Lives from 10 to 150 m on rocky drop-offs and coralligenous. Predator of crustaceans and echinoderms. Curious and often approachable diving. Iconic photo subject of Macaronesian bottoms.
