Description

Bodianus diplotaenia reaches 76 cm. Large Eastern Pacific hogfish. Imposing terminal males with yellow-pink body with characteristic two longitudinal black bands and distinctive massive forehead hump (melon). Females yellow-orange with diffuse dark vertical bars. Juvenile cleaners, work with Johnrandallia at cleaning stations. Protogynous hermaphrodite. Lives from 3 to 76 m on rocky reefs from Gulf of California to Peru, Galapagos. Predator of invertebrates. Iconic photo subject for spectacular forehead hump of dominant males.
