Description

Bodianus rufus reaches 40 cm. Large Caribbean hogfish with distinctive bicolor pattern: red-purple back, yellow belly, sharp horizontal separation at two-thirds of body. Blue head in juveniles, more uniform in adults. Protogynous hermaphrodite. Lives from 3 to 80 m on coral reefs of Caribbean and tropical western Atlantic. Predator of invertebrates (crustaceans, mollusks, urchins, small fish). Iconic photo subject of Caribbean dives. Differentiated cousin of B. scrofa Macaronesia.
