Symphodus tinca reaches 44 cm, the largest Mediterranean Symphodus. Protogynous hermaphrodite: females plain brown, males colored olive-green to blue with a marked pink patch behind the eye during the breeding season. Builds an algae nest defended by the male. Common in seagrass and rocky bottoms from 1 to 50 m. Frequent on coastal dives.
