Epinephelus labriformis reaches 65 cm. Eastern Pacific grouper with green-brown to olive body covered with distinctive numerous small starred white spots (hence starry grouper), dorsal black spot. Males with dark longitudinal line between spots. Lives from 2 to 30 m on rocky and coral reefs from Gulf of California to Peru, Galapagos. Ambush territorial predator of fish and crustaceans. Protogynous hermaphrodite. Local commercial and sport fishery. Iconic photo subject, one of the most common groupers in Sea of Cortez diving.
