Description

Epinephelus aeneus reaches 120 cm and 27 kg. Large tropical East Atlantic grouper (also Mediterranean) with robust bronze-gray to light olive body without marked contrasting patterns, pale fin edges. Lives from 0 to 200 m on rocky reefs, sandy and muddy bottoms from Mauritania to Senegal, Angola. Listed NT by IUCN following intensive commercial overfishing (important West Africa resource). Territorial ambush predator. Protogynous hermaphrodite. Trophy and commercial fishery. Wide-angle photo subject for imposing size.
