Description

Cromileptes altivelis reaches 70 cm. Unique silhouette among groupers: very low forehead, strongly humped back, elongated pointed snout giving it a panther-like profile. White-to-cream body densely dotted with small regular black spots. Protogynous hermaphrodite. Solitary on Indo-Pacific reefs between 2 and 40 m. Populations declining from overfishing and aquaculture capture, IUCN Vulnerable. Farmed in aquaculture in Southeast Asia.
