Description

Pomacanthus maculosus reaches 50 cm. Grey-blue to purple body adorned with a distinctive vivid yellow median vertical bar (hence yellowbar), finely speckled scales. Juvenile black with blue and white concentric stripes like all Pomacanthus. Endemic to the Red Sea, Persian Gulf and western Indian Ocean. Solitary, territorial on reefs from 4 to 50 m. Feeds on sponges, algae and tunicates.
