Description

Pagellus bogaraveo reaches 70 cm. Deep-sea pink to bright red sea bream with a black spot at the start of the lateral line, large black eyes adapted to low light. Lives from 150 to 700 m on rocky slopes and pinnacles of Azores, Madeira, Canaries and Bay of Biscay. Highly prized in gastronomy, overfished and listed NT. Migrates in schools up the drop-offs at night. Iconic photo subject of deep Macaronesian dives.
