Description

Sparus aurata, the gilt-head bream, reaches 70 cm. Slender silver body, unmistakable for its characteristic golden band between the eyes. Protandric hermaphrodite (young male then female). Preys on mollusks it crushes with powerful molar teeth. Common on sandy, rocky and seagrass bottoms. A flagship species of Mediterranean aquaculture, also seen in the wild.
