Description

Boops boops reaches 36 cm. Small Mediterranean and East Atlantic seabream with elongated silver body with 3 to 5 thin yellow-golden longitudinal bands on flanks, large black eyes (hence Boops, ox-eye). Lives in huge dense schools from 0 to 350 m in open water and above seagrass of Mediterranean and East Atlantic. Opportunistic omnivore of plankton, algae and small invertebrates. Very important commercial fishery. Iconic wide-angle photo subject for its tight reflective schools.
