Description

Oblada melanura reaches 30 cm. Mediterranean and East Atlantic seabream with uniform silver body with very distinctive large white-circled black spot on caudal peduncle (hence melanura, black tail). Lives in loose schools from 0 to 30 m in open water above rocky bottoms and seagrass of Mediterranean and East Atlantic. Pelagic predators of small fish and invertebrates. Commercial and amateur fishery. Iconic wide-angle photo subject for its reflective schools above Med drop-offs.
