Description

Melanogrammus aeglefinus reaches 1.12 m. Boreal gadid with a grey-silver to purple-brown body, recognizable by its straight dark lateral line and a large oval black spot on each flank behind the pectoral (the St-Peter mark by legend). Small chin barbel. Schools on sandy-rocky bottoms from 40 to 300 m, from Iceland to the Bay of Biscay. Major commercial fishery for smoked haddock and fish and chips.
