Description

Gadus morhua historically reaches 2 m and 96 kg (record). Large gadid with an elongated brown-grey mottled body, characteristic chin barbel. North Atlantic populations from Iceland to Newfoundland. Catastrophic collapse of Canadian stocks in 1992 (moratorium), slow recovery. Nordic species, highly tolerant of cold water. Pillar of European fisheries and gastronomy since the Middle Ages. IUCN Vulnerable.
