Description

Scorpaena plumieri reaches 45 cm. Stocky body mottled in brown, red, green, white, perfect camouflage on coral reefs. Distinctive trait: when it flares the pectoral fins to swim or threaten, three large black-and-white patches are revealed. Dorsal spines bear a painful venom equivalent to the Mediterranean scorpionfish. Never place a hand blindly. From 1 to 55 m in the Caribbean.
