Description

Ophioblennius steindachneri reaches 14 cm. Eastern Pacific blenny with elongated red-brown to black body with distinctive bright red lips, thin supraorbital tentacles. Eastern Pacific cousin of Ophioblennius macclurei (batch 13 Caribbean). Lives from 0 to 8 m on rocky shores, shallow reefs and tidepools from Gulf of California to Peru. Very territorial, defends small algal domain. Grazing herbivore. Accessible macro photo subject of coastal dives and snorkeling in Sea of Cortez. Name dedicated to Franz Steindachner, Austrian ichthyologist.
