Description

Actinia equina reaches 7 cm. Vivid blood-red anemone living on rocks of the Mediterranean and Atlantic intertidal zone. Remarkable trait: when the water recedes, it fully retracts its tentacles forming a smooth red ball resembling a tomato. Viviparous: young develop in the maternal gastric cavity before release. Very mild sting. Symbol of European rocky coasts.
