Description

Stegastes flavilatus reaches 15 cm. Small endemic Eastern Pacific Pomacentridae. Dark brown-green body with distinctive bright yellow flanks (hence flavilatus, yellow-flanked), dark tail. Bright blue-orange juveniles. Territorial like all Stegastes, defends algae. Lives from 1 to 20 m on coastal rocky and coral reefs from Gulf of California to Panama. Sympatric with S. acapulcoensis but distinguished by more marked yellow flanks. Discreet macro photo subject of Sea of Cortez dives.
