Description

Sebastes norvegicus reaches 100 cm and 17 kg. Largest rockfish (Sebastidae) Northeast Atlantic. Stocky vivid red to pink-red body with darker marbling, long venomous dorsal spines, large black eyes. Lives from 100 to 1000 m on deep rocky drop-offs of Norway, Iceland, Northwest Atlantic. Listed EN by IUCN following massive historical commercial overfishing (stock collapse). Commercial fishery still important but regulated. Rare wide-angle photo subject of boreal technical deep dives.
