Description

Sebastes mentella reaches 58 cm. Northeast and Northwest Atlantic rockfish (Sebastidae) with stocky red-orange to pink-red body with particularly distinctive large eyes. More pelagic than S. norvegicus, lives in dense deep open-water schools from 100 to 1400 m, sometimes in spectacular aggregations. Listed EN by IUCN following massive industrial overfishing (longline, pelagic trawl). Very important commercial fishery. Rare diving wide-angle photo subject, observable from ROVs or bathyscaphes.
