Description

Pomatomus saltatrix reaches 130 cm and 14 kg. Imposing pelagic predator with fusiform metallic green-blue back, silver belly, strong jaw with sharp triangular teeth. Lives in schools from 0 to 200 m in open water circumglobal temperate to tropical (Mediterranean, Atlantic, Indo-Pacific). Listed VU by IUCN. Extremely voracious predator, spectacular pack hunts on small pelagic schools (dead in carnage). Target of amateur sport fisheries. Wide-angle photo subject for electric hunts.
