Description

Pelagia noctiluca, the mauve stinger, reaches 12 cm in bell and 1 m in tentacles. Pink to purple, dotted with bright red spots. Potent sting: painful contact, redness and burning lasting several days. Bioluminescent when disturbed at night. Pelagic, mass summer blooms along Mediterranean coasts. Stay vigilant at the surface during swarm periods.
