Description

Nereocystis luetkeana reaches 12 m. Bull kelp, brown alga of North Pacific (Alaska, British Columbia). Single stipe from bottom, spherical floating bulb at top. Very long floating frond. Intertidal-shallow subtidal habitat (0-20 m). Forms less dense but highly productive forests than Macrocystis. Food for sea urchins, fish refuge. Least threatened = LC. More accessible than Macrocystis.
