Description

Macolor niger reaches 75 cm. Large snapper with extraordinary age dimorphism: juveniles white-black with wavy patterns and long filamentous pelvic fins (toxic mimicry), adults entirely uniform dark gray-black. Lives in loose schools from 3 to 90 m around coral drop-offs and wrecks of entire Indo-Pacific. Planktivore. Dramatic photo subject adults against blue, iconic macro juveniles. Great visual transformation, signature of Maldivian and Indonesian dives.
