Hoplopagrus guentherii reaches 91 cm and 16 kg. Unique snapper in Hoplopagrus genus, endemic to Eastern Pacific (Gulf of California to Panama, Galapagos). Stocky compact yellow-beige to olive-brown body with 5-7 distinctive black vertical bands (alternating wide and narrow). Lives solitary from 3 to 30 m on rocky reefs and wrecks. Nocturnal predator of hard invertebrates (mollusks, crustaceans) with adapted molar teeth. Appreciated sport and commercial fishery (barred pargo). Characteristic photo subject of Sea of Cortez reefs. Dedicated to ichthyologist Albert Gunther.
