Gymnomuraena zebra reaches 150 cm. Spectacular moray with elongated brown-black body crossed by numerous characteristic thin white-yellow vertical bands (50-70 bands, hence zebra). Only species in Gymnomuraena genus. Circumtropical distribution Indo-Pacific and Eastern Pacific, but more common and identifiable in Eastern Pacific (Galapagos, Cocos, Revillagigedo). Molar-like teeth adapted to hard crustaceans (durophagy). Nocturnal. Sought-after wide-angle photo subject for its striking horizontal stripe pattern.
