Description

Urobatis maculatus reaches 40 cm in width. Small round ray (Urotrygonidae) East Pacific tropical from Mexico to Peru with rounded disc brown to chocolate-brown with distinctive white-yellow round spots and ocelli arranged in ring (hence maculatus), short tail with venomous sting. Lives from 1 to 75 m on sandy bottoms and near rocky reefs. Smaller and more colorful than U. halleri. Sea of Cortez and Baja California dive photo subject, regular encounter on sandbanks.
