Description

Antennarius striatus reaches 25 cm. Stocky frogfish with body marbled with distinctive irregular dark stripes on yellow-orange, beige, brown or black background (hence striatus). Characteristic cephalic lure (illicium) in pale bilobed worm shape very visible used actively as bait. Lives from 1 to 220 m on sand and coral reefs circumtropical (Indo-Pacific, tropical Atlantic). Lightning ambush predator. More active than other frogfish, moves its lure with complex movements. Sought-after macro photo subject for its lure.
