Description

Antennarius avalonis reaches 36 cm. East Pacific frogfish (Antennariidae) temperate to tropical from central California to Peru with stocky globular body yellow-brown to orange-brown to red, granular skin, characteristic fishing rod. Lives from 3 to 300 m on rocky and coral reefs. Ambush predator. Name avalonis refers to Avalon on Catalina Island (California). Trophy dive photo subject, rare, observations celebrated at Catalina, Cabo Pulmo, Sea of Cortez.
