Description

Taeniurops meyeni reaches 1.8 m wide and 3 m long including tail. Distinctive disc marbled in black, grey and white, thick tail shorter than the disc armed with a venomous barb. Iconic species of the Maldives, Red Sea, Southeast Asia. Lies on sand or under coral overhangs, down to 500 m but often seen on recreational dives. IUCN Vulnerable. Do not approach the tail.
