Description

Sphyrna zygaena reaches 4 m and 400 kg. Hammer silhouette more regularly rounded without marked central notch (different from S. lewini). Olive-gray back, white belly. Lives in open water from 0 to 400 m in temperate to tropical zones, more cold-tolerant than S. lewini. Solitary or small group encounters in Azores, Canaries, Morocco, occasional Mediterranean. Overfished for fins, listed VU. Seasonal migration, possible aggregations. One of the dream Macaronesian encounters.
