Brown meagre (Sciaenidae) Mediterranean and temperate East Atlantic with elongated body golden-brown to bronze-brown with silvery reflections, distinctive dark dorsal and caudal fins edged in black, well-visible lateral line. Lives from 5 to 200 m near rocky reefs, in tight schools under overhangs and in sciaphilic caves by day, emerging to hunt at dusk. Distribution Mediterranean, Black Sea, East Atlantic from Portugal to Senegal and Cape Verde. Protected in Mediterranean (IUCN Red List, action plan), sport fishing banned in France.
