Description

Caretta caretta reaches 1.13 m carapace and 200 kg. Large marine turtle with massive head and powerful horny beak, brown-red to ocher-yellow carapace. Cosmopolitan: breeds from the Mediterranean to Australia. Documented transoceanic migrations (over 10000 km tracked by GPS). Feeds on mollusks, crustaceans, jellyfish. Nests on specific sandy beaches. IUCN Vulnerable. Pressures: fisheries bycatch, plastics, beach degradation.
