Description

Tetrapturus albidus reaches 3.1 m and 80 kg (now classified as Kajikia albida). Atlantic billfish (Istiophoridae) with deep metallic blue-purple fusiform elongated body with silver-white belly, long pointed bill. Lives in open water from 0 to 200 m throughout tropical and temperate Atlantic (documented transatlantic migrations). Fast predator of fish and cephalopods. Listed VU by IUCN following collapsed populations (longline commercial fishery, sport). Exceptional pelagic diving encounters, generally observed from surface during billfishing. Extremely rare wide-angle photo subject.
