Description

Odonus niger reaches 50 cm. Slender triggerfish with dark purple-blue to deep blue-green body, lunar crescent-shaped caudal tail (lyrate) with long points. Red teeth visible in frontal view (hence redtoothed nickname). Lives in dense schools from 5 to 35 m in open water above drop-offs and in currents of coral passes of Indo-Pacific. Planktivore. Iconic Maldivian schools Ari Atoll, Ras Mohamed (Red Sea). Spectacular wide-angle photo subject.
