Description

Mullus surmuletus reaches 40 cm. Elongated pink-red body with yellow longitudinal stripes, steep forehead, two characteristic white chin barbels used as sensory probes to search the sand. Emblematic of Mediterranean cuisine. Forms small schools on sandy-detrital and coralligenous bottoms from 5 to 400 m. Seen on any coastal dive.
