Heterocentrotus mammillatus reaches 15 cm diameter. Indo-Pacific urchin (Diadematidae). Dark black-gray, characteristic thick short slate spines (resembles pencil). Reef inhabitant 5-40 m. Intense herbivore algal predator. Nocturnal. Minimally threatened = LC. Highly observable on reefs.
