Description

Eucrossorhinus dasypogon reaches 3.6 m. Extraordinary bottom shark with flattened brown-yellow body with complex mimetic marbled patterns, characteristic snout adorned with fringed skin tassels (hence tasselled wobbegong). Stays motionless on bottom during day camouflaged, nocturnal ambush. Lives from 0 to 50 m on coral reefs of Indonesia, Papua, Great Barrier, Philippines. Listed NT by IUCN. Lightning suction ambush predator of fish and invertebrates. Bites rare but possible if disturbed. Iconic wide-angle photo subject.
