Description

Beryx splendens reaches 70 cm. Oval body bright red to orange, very large black eyes, characteristic spiny dorsal fin. Lives from 200 to 1300 m on seamounts, continental slopes and pinnacles of Azores, Madeira and other temperate oceans. Forms dense schools above rocky summits. Highly prized commercially, red flesh sought-after. Rarely seen diving except in bathyscaphe.
